Sizing up your situation
When buying a mattress, it’s important to make sure the length and width of it match your bed frame. If you don’t have a bed frame yet and are looking the find the perfect size, there are various factors to consider: How big is your bedroom? Do you share the bed with a partner or pets? Is your living space or sleeping space more important to you? To help you get to grips with standard bed and mattress sizes in the UK and find what’s best suited to you, we’ve illustrated and described our 8 mattress sizes.
Single
At 90 x 190 CM long, the single is one of the smaller mattress sizes on the market. Its compact footprint means the single mattress is ideal for children, especially as they grow from toddlers to teens, and single adults. Individuals with small living spaces, such as studio flats may also benefit from having a single bed.
EU single
At 90 x 200 CM long, the EU single mattress is the single’s slightly longer cousin. It’s most suited to bunk beds, and mid or high sleeper beds. Making it ideal for students living in halls of residence, or cramped guest rooms. As well as for taller teenagers and individual adults with limited space.
Small double
At 120 x 190 CM long, the small double is a good starter mattress for young adults living on their own for the first time. Best suited to one person, the small double mattress can sleep two adults if need be. A small double bed is perfect for guest rooms, but not ideal if you plan on sharing the bed with a partner and pets or kids.
Double
At 135 x 190 CM long, the double is the most common mattress size. It’s a bit wider than the small double, which means it’s suitable for two people, especially when bedroom space is at a premium. A double bed is a good option for those who don’t require too much space to move around at night.
EU Double
At 140 x 200 CM long, the EU double mattress is popular with individuals or couples who are moving into a new flat and where space is limited. The EU double is slightly larger than the double, so you gain a couple more inches of space in bed, without crowding your bedroom.
KING
At 150 x 200 CM long, the king size mattress fits best in a bedroom that’s at least 10 x 10 square feet. It offers enough space for couples or individuals who like having extra room to move around in bed. Longer than a double, a king size bed is also practical for taller people who need more legroom.
EU King
At 160 x 200 CM long, the EU king mattress is well-suited to couples who want to reduce disturbance at night, and have enough space in their bedroom to do so. It also gives you a tad more room to roll over at night and switch sleeping positions than the king mattress.
Super King
At 180 x 200 CM long, the super king size mattress is the biggest bed and mattress size available. The amount of space it provides means you can relax on it with the whole family, without it feeling overcrowded. Even your pooch can squeeze in somewhere. So if you like to spend a lot of time in bed, the super king bed is for you.
